Sometimes the best way to appreciate landscaping is from above.

The new cable car across the Thames is a fantastic way to see east London – and take a look at the interesting design layout around the cable car stations at the Royal Docks on the north side of the river, and Greenwich peninsula to the south. It opened just in time for the Olympics to shuttle people between sports venues.

The strong lines and blocky planting echo those of the innovative Thames Barrier Park about a mile further down-river, and on the north side reflects the angular architecture of the exhibition centre within the plot.

The landscaping was carried out by EDCO as part of a wider project to develop the waterfront in this once run-down stretch of docklands. And the photography was carried out via iPhone, so excuse the quality!
