Somerset house arty

10,000 flowers have somehow bloomed in the stone courtyard of Somerset House in London. The ‘Out of Sync’ installation of twisted, rust-coloured blooms reminded me of a field of French sunflowers. But I’ve just read the blurb and apparently they’re daffodils.

Chilean artist Fernando Casasempere has been working with clay that’s a by-product from industrial processes for 20 years, and has created each of these mini-sculptures by hand, “to give an impression of conformity and yet show how we are always able to spot subtle differences in repeated images”.

The frivolity of this flowery field is in odd contrast to the sober, monumental buildings which surround it. It made for a delightful 5 minute stroll on a sunny Saturday morning though. On til 27th April.
